Focus Tips for the Home-Based Business Entrepreneur

Are you about to embark on a major change in your life such as starting a new home-based business? No matter what business you choose, FOCUS is one of the most important things to have in order to reach your goals. It involves not only concentration, but also knowing how to invest your time wisely. Without focus, you can jump from one task to another and never really do anything well. Lack of focus impedes your progress and makes you feel scattered rather than productive.

Here are some tips to help you gain control of your focus:

1)      Show up ready to work. Since yours is a home office, it is especially important to resist the temptation to work in your sweats or pajamas. Make sure you are dressed (including shoes) and presentable. Send a message to yourself that this is a business, not a hobby.

2)      Visualize what you hope to accomplish for that day. Sit quietly for a few minutes with your eyes closed, breathe deeply, relax and gather all of your positive energy. It will be reflected in everything you do.

3)      Eliminate distractions as much as possible. If you are a stay-at-home Mom or Dad, you might want to get a sitter for a few hours. Make sure your work area is clean and free of clutter. Turn off the radio, TV and even the phone ringer. Unless making and receiving calls is an important part of your business, let your messages go to voice mail. Do not open email (one of the biggest time wasters) unless it is business related.

4)      Set aside specific hours to work. This is especially important with a home-based business. Be sure to let your friends and family know that you will be at work those hours and that you would be happy to talk to them at another time. It’s helpful to have a schedule when you need to plan around other things, such as picking the kids up from school.

5)      Plan your workday and write down the actions you are going to take. Decide approximately how long it is going to take you to complete each phase of your project and try to do it in the allotted time. Then cross off each item as you complete it (this part is fun). Reward yourself with a short break as you complete each task.

6)      Be organized. One of the best things you can do for yourself when starting a new business is to develop the habit of order. Having a system, establishing a routine, and setting priority will make your business run more smoothly and eliminate unnecessary stress.

Naturally, focusing is going to be easier if the business you’ve chosen is something that you are really passionate about. Also, as new entrepreneurs, we all have lofty goals and high expectations. That is what keeps us going. But, it is important to break down those goals into smaller, more achievable parts that we can take immediate action on and accomplish in the short term. If you do that with diligence, the long term will take care of itself.
