Legal Terminology: How Much Do You Understand? Take a Short Quiz

Legal terminology, or “lawyers’ talk” (sometimes known as legalese) is something that we all have to contend with at one time or another, especially if we are business owners. There are contracts, leases, and other legal documents that are vital to the efficient operation of even a small company.

When your lawyer sends you a contract with a little sticky note that says, “Please review and sign,” you are bound to come across a few of these formal-sounding legal terms. Now, he or she has probably given you the gist of the content and I trust my lawyer completely, but as conscientious entrepreneurs, we want to make sure that we are in agreement with everything we are signing. I don’t know about you, but as much as I would love to skim past those fancy (usually Latin) terms, I am stopped dead in my tracks and my eyes keep returning to that phrase that I’m not quite sure I understand.

Many legal terms, such as bona fide, status qou, and subpoena, have become a part of the language that we all use and understand. Some others, however, are more likely to be encountered only in actual legal documents and courtrooms.

Business owners or not, one of the most important things to remember is that we should never stop learning, whether it is through courses, reading, or just silly quizzes about boring legal jargon!

“The minute you read something that you can’t understand, you can almost be sure it was drawn up by a lawyer.” Will Rogers

Here is a little quiz, just for fun, to see how many of these legal terms you recognize and can define.
